Are Motorcycle Tires a Ripoff? The Darkside Car Tire Experiment

Running a car tire on a motorcycle seemed like the dumbest thing ever. So, naturally, we gravitated towards it and decided to give it a crack. Gulp. Don’t knock it till you crash on it - said no one ever.

No wonder I see darksiders are pretty much only drag racers and highway tourers.

Huh, does Ryan live in North Van? I recognize exactly where that last shot was taken as it is right beside Vancouver Dry Dock, where I just finished working on the latest Coast Guard ship we built.

You’ve contradicted yourself too many times to count. However the obvious is with your own chalkboard Pro and Con. Throughout you talked about how the car tire will want to upright the bike, harder to handle etc. But the very first Pro...9:47 “unbelievably, but after the first 10 min, I could hardly feel the difference”...then say the handling is like “shit” or is “comparatively garbage”. You also mentioned about saving $100, but they last 4x as long. Think about that for a minute...and I will be using Canadian $$ but here you’re looking at $300/tire plus installation, and with a bagger that’s another $100. Car tire $125, same installation...except I am not buying 3 more tires and installation chrg’s ...that math has it $1200 vs $225? Tad more than $100 Me, I put 100,000km using car tires on a LT Cruiser. I road coast to coast both Canada and US, including the Dragon the Snake..the Redwoods on USA1, Blueridge, through Death Valley in July...Rt 66 and yes even some snow. I found the tire out performed my previous MC tires, especially in bad weather conditions, hands down CT over MC tire anyway of the week imho. Long fast, floorboard scraping sweepers, where you start pushing to the point the ass end starts to give a little wave...CT, couldn’t get it to step out on me...throttle thru all day long. Never had a problem getting the bead to fit... ....then again I wasn’t trying to put the fattest tire on the skinny rim either lol. Certainly no need for the drama of C-clamps and tire wraps!...just choose a narrower tire...might help with your handling-non handling issues 🤔 The CT does form to the road..and no it’s not a issue for the sidewalks, as you clearly point out the loads that each tire is meant to take is considerably different. At the end of the have to choose for yourself. Your needs...driving styles and what you ride. Cruiser it’s definitely worth it in many respects...crotch rocket, just no need...You trailer your bikes to the destination then ride. Cruisers, it’s not about the destination, but how you get there. I will NOT buy a bike, that I am unable to buy a CT on, period! Don’t know it til ya try, said no one ever...well with your 5min of experience vs the millions of miles driven by those Darkside drivers might argue different. Not to mention, think about all those MC tire riders taking the tread down to it bald...we see them all the time, everyone knows of someone who brings it down too far because of the high costs, wanting everything mm of tread....whereas a car tire, at the fraction of the costs...what’s dangerous?? Neve heard of one bead braking or a CT blow out... I am sure with a channel topic of motorcycles...tire manufacturers wouldn’t want to hear how ‘good’ a CT might be...bad for business, bad for ads, sponsors etc...the money, 10’s, 100’s of millions?? in sales...they stand to loose a lot of $$$ if all of a sudden we were to promote CT’s 🤔 Certainly not suggestion any biases of course.

I went to look at a bike a few months ago that had a car tire on it, and it was the first time I had ever heard of this. I didn’t even bother test riding it. The way I see it, if he was willing to b a cheap ass on the tire, what other parts, service, or maintenance items did he skimp on. No thanks.

It seems like the car tire is too wide for the rim. I don't ride dark side, but I know people who do, and the sidewalls are never bent that far inward.

My -92 Honda Shadow 600 vt works fine with a car tire 165/80 r15. There are differencies of course but with my experience with Toyo 330 at 2.5 bar is butterly smooth!

I have no problems darksiding a cruiser style bike. Been there , enjoyed that. But it's generally a heavier bike made to ride leisurely and less aggressive in turns. Anything other than a cruiser style. Hell no. Riding style are made to be more aggressive in twisties and lean angles are steeper. If you do darlside a cruiser, directional tires are best. And you want to find tires that have the tread patch the rounds the most into the shoulder of the tire. Wouldn't recommend under a V speed rating either.

It's simple. If you feel you do not want to do this, don't. No one is twisting you arm to go to the darkside. I have one on my Silverwing and, except for a cotter pin a few years ago, I have had no issues riding in the twisties of the Eureka Springs Arkansas area or anywhere else.
