Thanks again to Mobil 1 motor oil for sponsoring last week's video and hosting us at their Engine Test Center - since we like their products, we've included them in this episode too. Visit AutoZone to find the right high-quality Mobil 1 synthetic oil for you: bit.ly/38EvoLT
Great so you got your first project car, now it’s time to make sure that it is ready for some mods! Before we throw any new bits at our Mazda Miata we want to make sure that it is in good running condition and healthy. So, we will do some basic but very necessary maintenance on our project car and you should do the same. We will talk about and show you how to DIY change your engine oil, coolant, power steering fluid, diff fluid, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. We’ll also cover air filters, fuel filter, belts, and spark plugs. Even if you don’t have a project car these are all routine basic things that you can do yourself to keep your car running for a long time and also save some money!
Money Pit goes hands-on in the garage with Zach Jobe as he shows you the fundamental principles of how cars work, and how to apply your DIY knowledge to your very own project car --all using our very own 1994 Mazda Miata.

Great video! I would add some additional notes: 5:28 Depending on what you do, might not need to lift the rear or lift the car at all. Also important to keep car leveled 6:15 It is advised to get a new crush washer. 6:30 You might need a special tool to remove it, if it is too tight 7:10 Good chance your garbage utility company can pick it up for free from the curb, as long as you label and secure it properly 8:57 In most cars you can fill the trans fluid without a pump 9:17 Typically FWD cars do not need to have differential oil changed, as it is part of transmission 17:12 Make sure there is no dirt before pulling out spark plugs. Blasting the hole with compressed air should suffice. 18:24 In SOME cases spark plugs need anti-seize lubricant to be added on the thread 19:38 Not all cars have two belts

W doesn't stand for weather it does stand for weight, at operating temperatures. The second number stands for room temp viscosity. Oil does not get thicker at it gets warmer, it very much so does the opposite.

How do you keep your garage floor material from getting nasty? ... My 1985 Saab 900, the manual transmission oil was the same as the engine oil! I used Mobil 1 in both. Sold at 250,000 miles running smooth & quiet, shifting smooth & solid, with ZERO engine or trans issues - not even the common (reverse) popping out of gear, I think it was.

I own not one, but two Miatas. 92, and 97. Can the NB, NC, and ND generation engines be interchangeable with the NA Generation? with out any modifications to the NA cars? If so what would be the best engine to replace the engine that already are in the cars.
Fox MacLeod
Fox MacLeod Vor 6 Tage
I'm sure this has been said already, but in case it hasn't, or it hasn't been noticed, I have two more important additions for the oil change: First, for the detergents and dispersants to really do their job and best clean out what's in the engine oil, it really helps to get the engine fully warmed up. Personally, I like to get the car on the highway for a few miles, just to get everything as warm as possible and have some higher-RPM operation, to stir everything up as much as possible. This way, the detergents get the most crud they can off of any surfaces, and the dispersants keep any dirt suspended in the oil. If things are too hot, either let it sit or put a fan in front of the engine just long enough to where you can work on it. Second, yes, take your oil to a parts supplier to get rid of it... *but call and check with them first!* Their waste oil tank might be full, and you certainly don't want to get there with jugs of old oil, only to find out they won't take it. Statistically, some of you are the kind of person who would, in that situation, then just leave the oil sitting outside the store because you can't be bothered. So just call first. If the parts houses can't take the oil, call around or stop in to some auto repair shops. They all have oil disposal tanks; if you ask nicely and don't have any other fluids mixed in with your old oil, one of 'em will probably let you dump it in their tank.

Thumbs up to the video I would just caution against putting aftermarket fluids in the car. Motor oil is ok but modern cars are very sensitive to transmission fluid and I would get that OEM from the dealer. Definitely call somebody you're cool with for a second opinion before putting aftermarket fluid in your car.

Seeing as this is aimed for beginners and intermediate drivers. Need to state the reason that you take the fill bolt out of the differential first. You want to take the fill bolt out first, so that you know it will come out. If it won't come out then you cannot refill it. So you don't want to let all your fluid out of your differential before you know for sure you can refill it.... Or you will have to drive it without fluid in the rear end. That might last 5 miles.......

Quick note about gapping spark plugs Some spark plugs should NEVER be gapped, such as Bosh Fine wire Double Iridiam, or NGK fine wire double iridiam They can be damaged if you attempt to gap them I no this because I work at a parts store and in the notes for these products, it says in all caps DO NOT GAP Also, the way is adjusted the gap of the spark plug is a MASIVE no no if you have anything other than a copper plug If it has platnum or iridiam on the ground electrode and you gap it like that, you could end up damaging the tip, and cause a bad spark, or even cause the platnuim or iridiam to fall off

You can make the brake bleeding process easier by no pumping the brakes multiple times. Don't worry about building pressure at first. When you do a lot of pumping like that you end up breaking the air bubbles into smaller bubbles which take longer to get out. If you just push the pedal down and hold, open the bleeder, close the bleeder, and pedal up you will save time. Just rinse and repeat. You should have went Right rear, Left rear, Right front, and Left Front for the bleeding procedure. You start at the caliper furthest from the master cylinder. For spark plugs don't use the gap tool to spread or even measure the gap. It will wear the material off of some spark plugs and never gets a great gap. Use feeler gauges to be more accurate. In a Miata it probably doesn't mean much, but it is a lot more professional. Aside from those little things. Great content and loving the shows.

Man I feel like I would really screw this up on my Range Rover. And I don’t want to do that. And on my M5... well... I can’t access anything. So idk what to do. Because I hate the dealer maintenance fees. Any suggestions guys? On the ranger rover Evoque I bought my wife, it’s a turbo and she loves it. I detail the hell out of that car and there isn’t a scuff mark on it. But you know as well as I do, it’s going to suck later on in life with electrical and possible engine problems, it’s 3 years old now and only 40k miles. But I know when that things starts pushing 75-100k miles there could be issues. I do have a 125k mile warranty on it bumper to bumper, thanks CarMax, only place I would buy a used car like this, but I don’t want to screw things up doing my own maintenance. However, the components are all there for me to do my own maintenance, so my question is Has anyone done maintenance on that car or one similar? Another Range Rover model, or some sort of other high performance SUV.? And if so did it turn out ok? Question 2... how the F do you do maintenance on a 2019 M5 Competition series? Even when I got my first bmw at 20 years old I had this issue. I sold door to door security, back in 2009 and made more than I was paid lol but all in all I saved all summer long, and went in there and bought that 2007 335i m series. Not an M3. When I brought it home to show my dad, shortly after he called me an idiot, he tried to check the fluids, and was like wait, you can’t even check your oil, yes you are an idiot son. Then a few weeks later I chipped it, and put on the M3 tires and he drove it, burned some rubber which brought him back to the feeling when he was my age taking cars like his el comino down to the track, and said ok, your not that big of an idiot. That’s really comfortable and a whole lot of fun. Haha love my dad. But neither of us figured out how to do the maintenance, paid 2200$ for brakes, and less than one year later someone crashed into me and totaled it. I switched cars to an avalanche truck, a Kia Optima slc turbo and even a corvette Z06 over the years, but all the while, I loved that BMW. So I went out at 31 years old and got one. The BMW M5 Comp. (door to door sales have been good to me, especially solar), yet after all these years I still have no clue how to do self maintenance like an oil change. I’ve only had the car for a few months, so I haven’t needed to yet. But I can’t see anything to maintain. No dip stick, no brake fluid container, no steering wheel fluid container, no nothing. Except I think I can put in window washer fluid. So has anyone ever worked on their bmw? How do you get all that plastic covers off the engine housing and everything else? Is it worth it? Is it possible? And does self maintenance void the warranty? Thanks for any feed back and response. I really appreciate it. I’m a car guy in the sense of living and knowing a lot about cars and loving to drive them, but I don’t know how to fix them like some people on here I’m sure. Also sorry for the long comment for anyone reading it and trying to help out, but I figured I’d try and make it an enjoyable story to read rather than just straight tracks. And if anyone wants info on how to get into door to door solar sales, how much you make or could make, the type of company you need to work for, how to do it, or anything else. I’m happy to offer that info to. It seriously changed my life. Everything I have I owe to God, but also door to door sales. Thanks everyone

DONT FORGET TO REMEMBER HOW YOUR BELT(S) IS ROUTED!!!! Quick question for anyone with experience. I just received a truck from my grandparents (1997 F150 XL, 4.2 V6, 5 speed manual). It was sitting for a while (multiple years) and I've already had to replace the fuel pump, and I replaced the fuel filter (pain in the fucking ass). It has 152,000 miles. I don't know the last time the trans and diff fluid were replaced. I have to do some work on the clutch hydraulics before I can drive the truck (slave cylinder gets stuck after light operation of the clutch, so I'm replacing everything besides the clutch itself [master, slave, all hoses and throwout bearing]) so I cant drive it yet. Should I take the "better safe than sorry" route and replace all the fluids? (I already plan on an oil change). Gotta change the spark plugs too, it likes to misfire. Also have a code for the IMRC valves. I did have a vacuum hose loose when I started it after the fuel pump replacement, so maybe that was the issue, idk.
