8:45 The truth will out; If you want a motorcycle with a bottom torque, then you need to look at max torque. But if you want a Japanese motorcycle that can only pull at absolute max rpm, then look only at HP.

If you are fortunate enough to be able to find a rear tire the same size as your front tire, you can get a tire on the front with more tread depth. Really, can't they make motorcycle tires last as least twice as long simply by giving us more tread?

1100 revs, going up a hill on my single cylinder. HP is out to lunch. Torque is king, because peak torque is at low revs, and peak power is at revs I literally never do. Torque at low revs wins for an ADV bike.

Flat torque and linear power is really boring to ride though. What makes a cruiser (or my asbo-worthy "sporty" turbodiesel) a riot is ridiculous torque at low rpm that's immediately accessible, going from bimbling around to see you later without preparation. Conversely what makes really sporty engines with a everything going on up top is the screaming rush as it comes in and the involved ride in keeping the engine on song. And what made my GSF600 feel twice as naughty was an aftermarket pipe that dropped out some of torque across 3-5k so it's really soft at bimbling around town speed, and then it comes really abruptly. The performance gain from the low end loss is the torque doesn't fall off as much after 10k so peak power is later and the top of the power curve isn't so peaky, but that's not really somewhere you get to go that often. My point is that it's the nonlinear delivery that makes bikes (and other vehicles fun). Obviously that's not what makes the easiest riding and most flexible performance, but any vehicle optimised for performance over a friendly ride is not going to prioritize peak power over linear delivery.

Thank you Ryan, Awesome explanations on the math for those that don't know it. Now, when people don't believe me, I can point them here for a second mental-incursion on why the true Horse power of the engine is when the Rpm is at 5252 rpm , and T= Hp.... ( or visa versa...and minus mechanical losses , of course). I'm still trying to figure out why HD sets rev-limiters to 4500 or 3500 rpm, Etc. Seems like a waste that the classic N.A. cruisers will never reach full potential of the motors full capacity.( Piston speed , maybe , but that hasn't stopped Yamaha or Kawasaki from revving.their under-square V twins to high rpm's... )...ciao

I love this... specially in the light of the "avoid crashing" vid... falling off a bike that created 70 bhp will hurt a similar amount to falling off a bike that makes 90bhp. I really don't care that my next bike... an easily ( may need to be easy I hear you chide ) maintained Suz GS500 can only get to 60 mph in 4 seconds not 3. I want to know it will get there without causing a national fuel shortage, without the brake line bursting, chain wrapping, or lights going out. the science is good but most of this is complete bs nobody who buys their first superbike has any idea of what the horsepower or torque means they are buying because of magazine reviews and who is winning in moto gp or superbike classes. The very old saying from my boomer generation and I'm sure way before is win on sunday and sales on monday. As for as thin tires are concerened that is serious i guess but he seems to have never heard of tire trimming. Most thick tread tires are trimmed about 40% to get them as thin as possible for the best balancing and lower the reciprocating weight to reduce flywheel effects for easier steering and allow faster acceleration and braking. Then there are Them amurican bikes and those owners could not care less what their bikes weigh if the bike weighs 2000 lbs thats just fine cus its more manly. Them bikers proabably brag if they had a headon with a toyota the toy would be totaled and the hd would have maybe a broken headlight.. If he was criticizing honda because their step through 50cc wasn't getting 100 mpg. that would be valid cus that buyer just needs the cheapest dependable wheels they could get. But in big bikes dick size is what matters nobody that buys street bikes cares about most of the things he wasted time demonstrating. 2 lab scales ??? is he kidding. Cheers

@J.R. Arnolli Well those charts are nice but i've been looking at them for about 55 years and quite simply most of them are merely suggestions of what you got. My first experience with that stuff was back in 66 when we prepared \ modified my friends 64 409 chebby 425hp 12.5 to 1 compression dual inline quad motor we found a I think it was a micky thompson crossram for it mallory ignition and a sig erson 560 lift 320 degree cam, The factory cam was nearly as big but the sales paper on the cam said it had quicker ramps and more effective oppening,. I was a kid so i really had know idea but we took it to a shop that had just got a new chassis dyno i think for carb jetting. Dynos were pretty rare at that time. The shop owner was pretty impressed cus that was the most powerful car he had ever had on it. Well after ever thing we had it came in at about 335 rear wheel horsepower that mechanic thought it was pretty decent for a mid buget build. Bet all i could think was after all we had done to the car it only needed 90 hp to be what the factory rated the motor. Now you can say what you want but what matters is which machine is faster. If you want to be technical the horsepower to weight ratio is much more important to performance. And more importent than that is the skill of the driver. My comments were really aimed at fortnine everybody thinks hes great and i don't think he really even likes motorpicles if he did that bike wouldn't be hung on the wall and if he reall liked them it would have been a little dual purpose dirt street bike Instead of whats there cause he could get anything he wanted. Nuff said cheers

Someone: What people want is even torque over a wide rev range. Everbody: Agreed! Somebody: So y’all want an electric bike! Everybody: Kill that traitor!
TpzBla
TpzBla Vor Monat
What he says is generally true for most normal riders because its a comfortable reliable line that won't throw you any surprises, but anyone who's been riding or been around cars and bikes for years knows that where ever the peaks are at on the graph, determines roughly what the engine is good for. If you want something that reliably cruises at not a very high speed (or tows in the case of trucks), then you want something that peaks low. If you want something you know you're going to be on the throttle and trying eek out every little bit of torque and horses, then a high peak is perfectly acceptable.
Cisium
Cisium Vor Monat
No one wants even torque over a wide range - or if you do, it's because you're socially dysfunctional aka psycho. It's like wanting your wife or girlfriend to have entirely predictable moods that are easily manipulated. You say you want that, you may even believe you want that - but if you actually got that you would get bored of playing with it in six weeks.

Here is a slightly different take. What we “feel” is acceleration which is the force at the wheel patch divided by the mass of the motorcycle (fully laden). From F=ma. Force is the torque at the wheel divided by its radius. So we don’t directly “feel” the torque bit it’s effect of accelerating the bike. Thoughts?

Well, in the "torque vs horsepower" discussion, there is also one more contender: The Gearbox Because you can get an engine with a high ratio gearbox, which will have less torque on the wheels, but higher maximum wheel RPM, but you can also get one with a gearbox that has lower RPM, but higher torque output.

Pirelli made in Germany you say. I've just bought a 200 metzeler rear for my busa, but pirelli own metzeler, that's ok, until you find out pirelli are Chinese owned.
