If there’s a golden rule to motorcycling, "don’t be an idiot” would rank #1. But beyond that, there are a few things you can do to drastically lower your risk factor.

Habit #1: *_WRONG._* Adjust your brake levers to just a hair off pad contact. Then the slow start of your finger squeeze will give you the smooth-yet-sudden braking you require.

Left foot down at a stop is one thing I've always done. That's how I was taught, and it stuck with me. As a bonus, riding on the CORRECT side of the road, here in Australia, it means my foot is down on the curb side. HA! :-p

A good way to practice baking when a ‘noob’ is sitting in front of the tv on your sofa progressively squeezing an empty coke bottle, imagining you’re braking on a motorbike .... I used to wear my helmet but not obligatory 😂 Suspect ABS might solve a few of these issues but I never had that

I life-saving habit. stereotyping. Soccer Mom in a minivan, Chinese person in a Lexus, yuppie in a Jetta, old people in german cars, people with a flag of Newfoundland on their back window. Yes it's racist. yes it's non-PC, but it's correct every time.

Interesting stuff, but if you preload the front brake just a little too much, you're wearing pads, using more fuel and run the risk of boiling your brake fluid (especially on a poorly maintained machine). It's not something I've ever heard of and don't do - I wonder how much my hand would ache trying to hold a lever in that position for several hours.

Good tips and I appreciate the physics. My tips: Fight complacency. Take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation class to develop good habits, then constantly reinforce them. Resist the complacency that commonly develops from familiarity. Maintain situational awareness at all times, using all of your senses. Don't listen to music while riding, or use Bluetooth to make phone calls. Scan constantly so you know where all the cars are, because in an emergency, you need to act immediately. There's no time to scan to see where you need to go. You need to have that updated info at all times. Be particularly careful when approaching intersections. Always assume that every car is playing Death Race 2000 and is actively trying to kill you. Ride defensively. When stopped at an intersection, be on the side of the lane and continue scanning. If a car is going to rear end you, pop the clutch and escape around the cars ahead of you.

Never heard anything so silly. Any experienced motorcyclist knows in any emergency to apply the rear brake then bring in the front brake progressively as weight transfer occurs. This can be done in seconds. Watching where you are going at all times like you should do and paying attention to your surroundings will be of far greater benefit than overheating and wearing out your brake components prematurely by holding them in a lapped position while riding. Likewise as in your video target fixation is a grave error and if you keep looking at something your mind will autonomously make you steer straight into it. In an emergency, get on your brakes with care, while you are doing that initial braking make a decision on whether you can stop short or need to go around an obstacle. If you can stop short keep braking, if you are going around release the brakes and steer. Look for an empty space, it will help you avoid a collision.

the front brake thing, I always use 1 finger to rest on it. my 1 finger doesn't have the force to lock the tires, but enough to start the braking. And the middle finger will help in that 0.4 sec after weight transfer done to grip it

You should always hit the rearbrake first then frontbrake.

I'm new rider maybe 300 miles now.i recently rode up on 2 bikes. and happen to run same direction for about 30 miles. they was much faster then I and i seen this effort and within 1 mile i started to lay back and running my own line. I also noticed i wanted to try and keep up. pride can get the best of you... self restraint is a practice skill

Disagree with the glass transition statement. Your tires will not experience a glass transition from being compressed under braking. It's a thermodynamic event, a phenomenon that happens at a very low temperatures for most thermoset elastomers, especially tires. Exactly why the O-Rings could not seal properly on the 1988 Challenger launch: past the Tg.

Thanks Ryan, those safety tips were timely for me as I have started riding again after decades not riding at all and guess what it doesn't all just come back as the saying goes " Like riding a bike" it is a process of re-learning, creating muscle memory, and defensive driving habits that take time and conscious effort to remaster.

The left foot technique for stopping is what I have been promoting myself. It is also completely unnecessary to get both feet down - I can hardly do that on my KTM 790Adv R. And it will feel very unstable. However the left foot can go flat down, with the right one on the break and I am standing entirely stable!
