How Harley-Davidson Killed Itself

If Harley Davidson is the Titanic, the pandemic might just be that one big iceberg. Worse still, it had a hole in the hull and sputtering engines before all this even began. Damn. Is HD done for? [Details below]

Harley's are loud - annoyingly so. I like my Honda Forza for around town, and my Toyota car for longer trips. Nothing against American cars, I used to own a Chevy, but the Hondas and Toyotas are cheaper total cost of ownership than the expensive brands. And quieter. I can't stand it when people with unmuffled exhaust do full throttle starts in a residential neighborhood; assholes. In a few years I'll probably by an electric something. Make that at a reasonable price that's also fun to ride and I might buy it.

If they just built a great bike that everyone wanted - you know like a real great company.

Pretty cool video. I ended up getting a used 2012 Softtail Deluxe because I like the stytling and feel of the bike, but you could definitely get some of that staleness in the air of the dealership. One complaint I have is that dealerships are all franchises, so there's no consistency between locations. So while all of the sales folks/techs/business dudes at one dealership might all be great at their jobs and genuinely give a shit about their customers, you may end up at another dealership and have the complete opposite experience.

They should also produce small singles like bmw , ktm , husqvarna and royal enfield to target masses, young and new riders as well as women riders..if they don’t adapt with time then they will go extinct..most of their bikes are out of reach of common man because of high pricing and not everyone wants to ride big bikes most people want a small everyday commuter bike too..So they have to target masses with small affordable bikes too if they want to make profits and grow as a company..

Ryan 👏👏 1st class explanation of a business in deep trouble and possibly the simplest explanation of share buy backs (and the reason why boards like them....) I've seen. Chapeau.

yep,in Australia harley try and sell a 500cc piece of junk made in India (no offence to India)its small gutless and soooo ugly, in oz, new riders have to do 2 yrs on a bike up to 650cc before getting an open licence,45hp max,, so instead of depowering a Sportster (easily done) they tried to make BIG profit selling (trying to) this turd 500 for 13k now there offering 100% money back if you buy one and trade it back on a bigger Harley in 2 years-guess what,, hardly anyone is silly enough...On the other hand, we have Ducati selling a 659 learners bike that is a clone of its 1000cc brother, sells like half-price jack daniels at Sturgis..

Nobody builds a bike I like, so I bought a forty year old bike for a third of the cost of a new. It was immaculate, it gets looks, makes me smile and I won't lose any money on depreciation, hey, it may even go up in value! I can even work on it just using an assortment of hammers, no electronics to leave me at the side of the road. It has classic looks, man I should have done this years ago.

Harley is not an America icon. It is a marketing icon. Harley pays a lot of money to the media to say they are but they aren't.

The other problem is that American products aren’t cool any more overseas. The recent negative view of America has made an impact.

Well guys, the new ones don't vibrate as much, use a mono shock, better brakes, and better acceleration. Still heavy though

I honestly think harley could pull it back with a small displacement, say 750cc, bike priced under 8k

Harley Davidson sales are down. Royal Enfield sales are sky rocketing. Moral : People into classic motorcycles love affordable, simple, easy to maintain bikes.

Let's be real, no one looks cool riding a HD. It looks boomer as hell and no chicks under 180lbs like it. Sport bikes look cooler and are more fun to ride. Japanese motorcycles look more futuristic and the street racer feel is exhilarating and sexy. Street fighters, sport bikes, Cafe racers are all cool, fun, and sexy. A HD just screams that you buy into the brand. No one should consider a HD in their right mind.

Drove a TVS for work for half a year several years ago, loved that bike. Great ride, great fuel economy. But the local dealership closed down due to incompetent sales staff. They were bent on making more money out of monthly payment plans than walk in cash sales. I offered to buy one cash, they overpriced me to force me to go for their plan. Bought a Honda instead.

You suggested that BMWs are overpriced. They are expensive, yes. I ride 65,000Km per year, mostly commuting, and I can assure that BMWs are worth the extra. So far, since 2007, I've had an R65, an R80 and now an R1100RT. I couldn't imagine a Harley doing this well.

I bought a used '68 Sportster in 1972 (still had AMF on the tank), and customized it with 8" overs, dog bone risers, pullbacks, king/queen seat and trident sissy bar, cruise pegs, and a custom paint job. Did all of the work myself, while in the USAF, stationed near Phoenix. There were several chop shops in "the valley", and they were alternatives to dealerships...almost fraternities. This was true across the country. Then, Harley started farming out stuff to Japan, like the front ends. Then, they put the chop shops out of business, and you had to go to a dealership for whatever you needed. That was the demise. I laugh at badass bikers today, wearing their "colors", while riding dressers with fatass seats and saddlebags.

Their dealerships are very much a big part of the problem. I was treated like crap at two different dealerships here in the city because I guess I didn't look like the usual HD buyer/rider. But the good folks at the Indian & Yamaha welcomed me like I was a long time friend. Indian is who I went with , and I couldn't be any happier with my first brand new motorcycle. The bike ( 2019 Chieftain) right out the box doesn't need any upgrading at all. BTW I was riding a 2009 ex-Police Road King purchased from our city auction

It was always a nightmare on weels but people didn't care. Now, who can afford that mentality? That is the long and short of it; People cannot afford it. If they do they don't go off buying an old clunker but something that is actually usefull.

Imagine all the steel that can be extracted from those abandoned auto manufacturing buildings. It's right here, has been for decades but nope, let's import it instead. Same with plastic, send it to China instead of recycling it here ? Imagine states providing incentives to knock down EVERY abandoned piece of [ugly] property and upcycling the material. Jeez, the lack of vision is myopic.
