I thought this was a well written break-down of different shapes: www.saraheberle.com/understanding-the-various-shapes-of-trimmer-line/
It’s interesting that so many different companies have their own proprietary shape etc, but I can’t find any scientific research to back any of it up. Fascinating!

Robert subscribed then hit the bell. Be more like Robert. In all seriousness I was impressed by how quickly he came up with a well thought out, nuanced hypothesis without even a moment’s notice. Huge thanks to Robert. Also, a huge thanks to everyone who supports Smarter Every Day on Patreon at www.patreon.com/smartereveryday Thank you! Destin

Can you do a video of how birds eat in slow motion? Birds eating food are very quick to the naked eye and we do not know how fast they do that.

Don't be afraid as a scientist to interview people, who practically perform your field of study every day. It is a win-win situation. You both will learn from each other. I did this a lot and must say: They will tell you the edge case, you won't have thought of in a life time.

It seems like the star may have more of the right turbulating pitch to create more of "golf ball" dimple effect (if the dimples are too deep or large you lose the aerodynamic advantages) as aerodynamic turbulators versus the coarse pitch of the square which I think might trip the turbulence into less stable oscillating state. I bet if you could do an even more high speed camera and at different angles you could see the way the air it is passing though causes vibration in the filament. It'd be interesting to see a study that gets more into the specific velocity of impact and the stiffness of each line with one blade of grass versus an increasing density of blades it must go through to determine specific cutting efficiency per mass of material removed in the cut and for different DOC for a static amount of KW/HP in. I'm going to stop before my wife wants to strangle me for nerding out on DEshow at midnight... Cant help it. (Kietty, if you're reading this I'm sorry but not sorry... love you babe ;) ) LMK what you think!

Just a comment about the twists on the lines. A tubular object when subjected to high air speed tends to wobble a lot. The twist breaks up the air turbulence thus making the object much more stable. You get to see that applied a lot on bridge cables.

a string trimmer is a string trimmer regardless of what the majority want to call them. if the majority was to call a tornado a spiny boi, would that make "spiny boi" the correct term? i think not! and with how fast it spins the shape don't really matter all that much.

I think the star shaped line getting cleaner cuts might just come down to the fact that it has more 'edges' so it has a higher chance of contacting the grass with a sharp shear angle.

I ran a stihl 450 fs for 3 years 10 hours a day. I have used every kind of blade from a the star to a skill saw blade to cut down 8 inch tree trunks. We would use string line. it really depends on the shape of the line and the density of the brush you would cut to go with what shape of line we would use.. At the end of the is also traveling slower then the inner part of the line. The star moves air evenly and cuts better because the speed at the end of the line is distributes the power from the center out is distributed quicker and more evenly.
